An individual earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was publicly declared, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the event.
Changing Odds in Predictions
Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month increased in the period preceding former President Trump announced on the weekend that the president had been seized.
One account, which registered on the site in December and took four positions, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a initial bet of $32,537.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Market Signals Before Announcement
Trading information shows that traders put the odds of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
Yet these probabilities had increased to 11% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the first hours of the next day, indicating a sharp shift in positions immediately prior to the public announcement was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a transaction based on non-public details," commented a financial reform advocate.
Several of other individuals also earned large payouts from bets on the same outcome.
Political Attention Intensifies
Politicians are starting to take note.
A new rule introduced on recently aims to prohibit government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.
