Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors involved, not just his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
